This is to say that the blog is good to promote awareness about and use of OER in Africa. It helps to avoid reinventing the wheel. However, there is always a need to localize to meet the context on the ground. Use of OER is not something to be taken off-the-shelf and be used immediately (not like plug-and-play). Specially, at University level the local curriculum may vary somewhat from the curriculum where the OER is originally developed. Educators in Africa need to be trained how to adopt the available OER to their own needs.

Well here I am. The first comment.

I'm Rick's friend who makes a living by tuning and repairing pianos.

I think teaching a language would be intersting. I'd love to teach spanish. Too bad I don't speak spanish!

Take care.

Laura:

Thank you for the comments and for the kind words about our LLU.

I should mention that Felix is one of (now) 5 bloggers that frequent the site, each of us with different "spins" on using technology for teaching languages (why so many? Well, because there is no one way of doing what we do, and we believe that we can all learn from each others' expertise vs trying to do it all on opur own).

Jan Marston from Drake University just joined us and she will be talking about teaching Culture and Languages acroiss the Curriculum. Doug Canfield talks about virtual worlds an SLA, Felix and Ryan do a masterful job of talking about the tools, and I tend to talk about teaching with social software (blogging and Skype in particular)

We would --love-- to have a K-12 teacher/tech person/blogger join us... hint hint hint

If you have any suggestions about topics and threads you would like for us to pursue, by all means, let us know!

Cheers

I came to your blog through a link on FLTEACH. I teach French in a small international school in the north of Thailand...imagine my surprise to see this video! This was so much fun for me to watch (I speak Thai as well). What this Thai person said is so true--the Thai are very encouraging about their language. Even when I just say hello (sawasdi ka), the reaction is often, oh you speak Thai so well! This makes me smile---it is the land of smiles as well. You must visit someday if you have never been here!

I was unable to go to the keynote, so am depending upon what others who did have told me, your comments, and my own many years of working with middle/junior/high school students. I love technology myself, but I notice that Mr. Prensky had minimal experience teaching a language and that only to elementary school French students back in the 70's. My question would first be one of universal access --will schools supply cell phones, iPods, personal computers, etc., and pay for connection costs? How to deal with safety and legality issues in our litigious society?

Hey, Laura! I loved geobeats. Thanks for letting me know about it. I had a great time visiting my favorite places in Buenos Aires and Rio this afternoon. I have created a link to it on my website, and I will definitely use it in my classes. Thanks enormously for this idea as well as for the many others you have shared with me since I met you. You rock!
